Opinion | The Unifying Power of Music

 

 

Today’s topic is heavier than I normally write about. As I have watched the war in Ukraine unfold through the media, I can’t help be feel a sense of uselessness. My heart aches for those who are suffering, and I feel like there’s not much I can do to help.

 

I recently saw a video of various violinists playing a Ukrainian folk song from bomb shelters to show support to Ukrainians. As I watched, a familiar quote came to my mind: “Where words fail, music speaks.” While music won’t fix all of the problems in the world, I believe the unifying power of music can change hearts and unite humanity for the better. I can’t help but wonder if more people could feel that changing power if there would be less hatred and more love.

 

I’m so grateful for the opportunity music has given me to feel more peace in the world and in myself, and to be able to pass that gift on to others.
