Key Signature Flashcards | Utah Piano Teacher
I love using flashcards for my beginner and intermediate students. I’ve hunted through Pinterest many times to find the perfect sets of flashcards for various skill levels. There is SO much good content out there, but I wanted to create my own sets of printable flashcards so I could tweak them and make them just how I wanted. These key signature flashcards get used regularly in my studio.
How to Use Key Signature Flashcards:
After my students have passed off their note names and have memorized a handful of scales, I start drilling key signatures. To pass off the flashcards, students need to recite the name of the major and relative minor of every key in 2 minutes or less. Once they have achieved this, I ask them to name the key and then play the accompanying scale (no time limit here). As a result, my students’ knowledge of keyboard geography and finger patterns is solidified. I’ve found that learning key signatures in this way has also really improved my students’ sightreading abilities.
The set that I created uses the grand staff, making it ideal for piano or voice students or for use in a classroom setting. Find my version of key signature flashcards here.
I’d love to hear how you implement key signatures into your teaching curriculums! Let me know in the comments.
