Back to School Practice Tips | Herriman Violin Lessons
After a summer of very flexible schedules, traveling and lots of free time, it can be tricky to get back into school mode. Today, I’m offering some tips to help you prioritize practice time as your kids are getting back into their school routines.
Choose a Consistent Time of Day
In my house, practicing happens before school. We are all early birds at our house, and with school not starting until 9:00 AM we have just enough time to fit in practice time before heading off to school. I really like getting it done first thing in the morning before other things come up in the day.
Have Realistic Expectations
Transitioning into a new routine can take a little time. Be mindful of this as you are striving to help your children develop practice habits. If your child is acting frustrated or tired, try shortening the practice time. If they are particularly interested in a certain piece or technique, let them spend more time on that. Be flexible and try to keep a positive and encouraging attitude. A perfect practice session does not exist.
Consistency over Perfection
It will not be the end of the world if your child misses a day of practicing. Contrary to the belief that I was taught growing up (“You must practice on the days that you eat!”), What you do most of the time is more important than the occasional mess-ups. As long as your child is practicing more days than not they will improve. And, most importantly, don’t forget to give yourself some grace as a parent.
