3 Types of Violin Bows | Online Violin Lessons

When it comes to violin bows, there are pricing options for every level. Bows can differ in quality depending on the type of material they are made with. Here are three types of violin bows you can find on the market and the pros and cons of each.

Wooden Bows

Bows with sticks made of wood are generally the highest quality and the most expensive bows on the market. Most wooden bows are made from pernambuco wood, a resource that has become endangered over the years and has driven up the price point for these types of bows. There are lower-quality wood bow options available, but you may choose to spend your money on a higher-quality carbon fiber bow instead.

Carbon Fiber Bows

Carbon fiber has become increasingly popular in the last decade and can be as good as, or better than, some wood bows. Caron fiber is a synthetic material that is both lightweight and very strong. These characteristics make it durable and long-lasting while helping you produce a solid tone on your violin.

Fiberglass Bows

Fiberglass bows are the cheapest and lowest quality bows you can buy. When you’re just getting started with the violin, they can can get you by on the beginner level. However, I wouldn’t recommend them, and if you want to get serious about the violin you will probably want to upgrade at some point.
